Although I always want to play, if we end up with a six guy five girl night, I would feel bad if Jon didn't get to play as much this week. Will sit if I have to. Although, I am feeling offensive today.

We all played a good game, and how many times do you get to witness a triple play?

This was what I posted in my personal blog tonight.

Nutcan

July 1st, 2008

This is going to be one of those half asleep and equally confused type of posts. I have read numerous material that suggests free-writing for a predetermined length of time and then seeing what happens. This is what I plan to do. My predetermined time limit is solely gauged at the point I get bored and or dis-interested.

I am tired. I played some softball this evening as I do on every Tuesday. I am on the Eau Claire European Slow-Pitch Softball Circuit which should tell you precisely how talented the competition is.

I really miss playing sports. I miss the competition, I miss the camaraderie.

Last year, I played on a team hosted by an Outlaw biker bar. It was a Motley crew Crue (does the Plurk rock-on smiley) to say the least. I was the DJ and the manager of a house of Harleys called Fat Boys.

I have been in some rough joints before, but this place was something else. There actually was a guy that worked there named Gutter, although in true Fat Boy’s fashion he always spelled it with one T instead of two.

Our shirts for the game, chosen by a large rough biker, had the bar’s logo on the front while on the back in the world’s largest writing was printed:

“It’s what’s between your legs that counts”

Of course they were talking about motorcycles, but the evangelical townsfolk never really picked up on it.

Being a hard-core biker bar, this clean cut college student stood out like a sore thumb. The whole thing was plain embarrassing. People yelled at each other all game, it wasn’t much fun, and that was simply the Fat Boy’s trademark.

Anyway, one of the rival teams in last year’s league was a small website called Nutcan.com. After we beat them in the first game of the season, I immediately went to their page to offer up my usual dose of smack talk.

The forum was basically a bunch of dudes and a chickette from Eau Claire that had a website–well just to have one. They argued amongst themselves about the finer points of sports, politics, and anything else they could dissect and re-hash until all bases had been covered.

It was a great place to find intelligent banter and you could kind of feel the love.

I continued to troll for awhile, but eventually started to join in the discussion as soon as the found out they did a NFL Football pick-em contest each week.

This season, I got invited to play on the nutcan.com team. It has been a refreshing experience after last years surreal situations. No one yells, everyone is positive, and even when we lose it still is fun.

Someone once told me that “you are who you hang out with.” In this instance the phrase could not be more true.

Positivity is infectious. It spreads, it relaxes, it grasps the moment and owns it. It is a true pleasure to play and to have met the entire lot.

Today, I thank Nutcan.com for being well - nutcan.

Although we turned what might be the first triple-play in league history tonight, it has not always been that way.

Also, Sarah mentioned it, but for posterity sake: Matt caught a liner at shortstop with zero outs, basically ran into one of their base runners running to third as result of his momentum for out number two, then the runner on first kept running to second anyway and Matt ran most of the way to first before under-handing it. It easily could have been an unassisted triple play.

I'm trying to replay the catch in my head to think if he made a nice play to catch it in the first place, and that's why the runners took off, or if was a fairly routine line out and inexplicable base running. Maybe Matt can fill us in on that.

Updated Standings (as of last week)

Edit: We were in first for one glorious week.

Edit2: We've also given up the fewest runs in the league.

I'll add what I can remember about the triple play:

Before/during the at bat I was thinking about what I would do if the ball was hit to me and thought that if it was a grounder I would look for a quick tag on the runner going to third and then go to second or first for a double play. So when it was a liner instead of a grounder, it was already in my mind to try and tag the runner (although she made it easier that it should have been).

The ball was lined a little to my left and the runner on second started to run. Since the fielder has the "right of way" to field a batted ball, I kind of cut her off and caught the ball just ahead of her and then tagged her almost simultaneously. I then looked up and was kind of surprised because the runner from first was running and was almost at second already.

It's weird how your mind works cause in about half a second my mind went from "Oh cool, we can get a triple play" to "Oh crap, what do I need to do" to "Oh yeah, I can just toss it to first".

I would be lying if I said I didn't kick my self a little afterwards for not going unassisted, but my momentum had me going towards first, and it happened so fast that I didn't really think about that possibility until the ball left my hand.

As for why the runners were running, I don't know. I don't think it was that tough of a catch where they would have thought that I wouldn't be able to get it. The only thing that made it less than (or would it be more than) routine was that the runner took off and sort of got in my way, but I don't think that was her plan in running.

The REALLY weird thing is that even if it wasn't a catch, it would have been an easy tag out on the runner going to second, though I suppose in his mind he had to go to second because if it wasn't a catch it was a force at second. Nevermind.
