Too little, too late.

Sure- now that they're already dead, dying, or too wracked with disease or pessimism, NOW we can come in and give them help.

I don't know how to understand what these "leaders" are trying to do here.

Do you think our government would've opened with welcome arms Iranian ships or Columbian ships or just let anyone from any country jump in and "help"? I say yes, if the arms were firearms.

There is also a difference- we are capable as a country of taking care of certain things on our own.

Also, what you say is slightly off, since Myanmar doesn't have open hostilitiies with the US, France, England, S. Africa, or anyone else who's trying to help. We obviously have problems with Iran and Columbia.

And in regards to Jeremy's post, Cuba is obviously on our list as well.

Yeah, the situations are vastly different. Some people do believe that in a crisis you should accept any aid though. Also, though we do have means of taking care of our own Katrina was a massive disaster that could have been worthy of the help of all comers.

Who other than Cuba offered help? I could concede the point if we were offered help (and didn't accept it) from a friendly.

I don't think we're arguing a point, or anything, that needs conceding.

I think you're splitting hairs with the open hostility reference. Myanmar relations with the US are hardly friendly, it's a military governement that much of the Democraticish West never liked in the first place. I imagine their concern is that letting people from these countries come in and be the saviors would most likely be damaging to their egos and popularity amongst the people of their country and the foreigners would explicitly trying to force that envelope. So yes, not quite the same as US-Iran, but I don't find their relutance at all suprising.
