I thought this was an interesting thread and decided I would pull out the things I found the most interesting. This wasn't necessarily the first time I'd heard of these things, but that doesn't make them any less interesting. The Virtual Hair Cut
You must use headphones for it to work.
The Stopped Clock Illusion
Watch the second hand go around the clock. Focus just to the side of it and the hand stops. Not a big deal right? The brain doesn't process what isn't directly "told to". However, looking back at the clock causes the hand to pick up where it left off. Where'd that time go?
To travel 1 light year in our fastest spacecraft (so far 36,000 mph) it would take 18,640 years. The closest star to us is Alpha Centauri, a mere 4.37 light years away. So it would take us 81,459 years to just get to our closest star.
Our galaxy is about 100,000 light years across. So to travel across our galaxy it would take 1,864,000,000 years.
Euler's_identity
eπi + 1 = 0
Five of mathematics' core constants coming together in such a simple equation.
If you were to pick yourself apart with tweezers, one atom at a time, you would produce a mound of fine atomic dust, none of which had ever been alive but all of which would have been you.
Gravity moves at the speed of light, so if the sun was suddenly nabbed away and gone, we would be orbiting nothing for 8.3 minutes before we we're "flung" in a straight line out into space.
4^4^4^4 is a monstrously huge number.
The exact value of Pi has an infinite decimal expansion: its decimal expansion never ends and does not repeat. Turn the odd numbers in pi into 1's, and the even numbers into 0's. Then 3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510 becomes
3.10111 00111 01111 01000 00011 01011 10000 01111 01111 11110.
If that goes on forever, and never repeats then every binary sequence ever created, or that could ever be created, would be present. That means that somewhere in pi is every picture ever made, every movie ever created, everything mankind could ever know.
Despite there being 365 days in a year, the odds that a group of 50 random people will have 2 people with the same birthday is over 97%.
The Monty Hall Problem
It's named after the game show "Let's Make a Deal." A contestant was allowed to choose one of three doors, a valuable prize was behind one, and worthless prizes were behind the others.
Once the contestant made their choice, Monty Hall opened one of the other doors, revealing one of the gag prizes. He would then open the contestant's chosen door to reveal whether they picked the real prize or not. Now, let's assume the contestant could change doors once a new door was opened. Would it be to their advantage to switch doors? If the contestant guesses that the good prize was behind door #2, door #1 was opened to reveal a gag prize, is the good prize more likely to be behind door #2, or door #3?
Our brain incorrectly reduces the problem thinking that to begin we had a 33% chance, and now have a 50/50 shot at the good prize. In actuality you'd be twice as likely to win if you switched to door #3.
Without getting into the math and set theory as to why it happens it's easiest to think about the problem by increasing the scale. Say there were 10,000 doors, you pick one, and are then shown 9998 of the doors that aren't the good prize. Which is more likely to hold the good prize, the door you picked out of 10,000, or the one door they just happened to not show you out of the 9,999 you didn't pick?
That's all I feel like doing now. I'll see if I can dig up some more stuff, assuming anyone finds this stuff interesting anyway.

As a DJ of 20 plus years ... DJ's have long known this right/left brain affect. When you learn how to DJ and you want to blend two songs together you have to be able to count and match beats of one record to the other which has a very mechanical almost mathematical basis to it. Then after you have them matched you need to work the mixer very artistically so that the next incoming song sounds pleasingly smooth and extends the song that just came before it in an aesthetically interesting way. This is purely an act of hearing and feeling what sounds good. I think if you ask most DJ's they will agree that learning how to DJ is about affecting the mind in a way that opens up a neural pathway between the left and right sides of the brain so that you can simultaneously multitask your hands, your ears, and your mind. Most new DJ's get headaches from the process. After the headaches go away, there you are with a shiny new brain with freeway sized neural pathways ready for loud music, flashing lights, and intense ADD distractions. |

Man has had about 6000 years of recorded history. On December 17, 1903, the first flight, by Orville Wright, went 120 feet in 12 seconds, at a speed of only 6.8 mph 10 feet over the ground. On July, 20th 1969, about 65 years later, we took a multi-ton craft to the moon. Sure 65 years is a long time in terms of technology, but it's not even a lifetime, think of how many people were able to celebrate/read about both events happening. |

I was listening to Sportscenter and someone made a comment about how the sun was 93 million miles away. I thought about how that's a long way kind of. Then again, I thought how a mile is big but it's not big in terms of space travel I guess. But it is still a long way and it shows how fast light moves, since it's only about 8 minutes for light to travel from the sun to earth. Then since I was thinking about how long a mile is, I of course thought about a visual representation of a mile and about running a mile like we did in school. Then I came upon a great realization. At some point when I was younger, I think I ran the mile in about 8 minutes. (I haven't legitimately timed myself in the last decade but I'm putting myself at the low 7's now maybe. I have no clue.) Anyway, say I run the mile in 8 minutes. That means that the speed of light is 93 million times my speed. (The speed of Jon?) It's not much but I think it's an interesting way of looking at the speed of light. It might not be any easier to grasp, but it's fun to think about at least. To put it another way, if light was in your gym class, it would not only beat you to the finish line, but have time to eat all of the orange wedges before you got there. Personally though, I always found the banana pieces the most enjoyable after the run. |

Along the lines of the Monty Hall problem. Don't look up the answer. A man and a woman are making small talk. He finds out she has two kids. He asks if she has any boys and the woman says "yes." What are the odds she also has a daughter? |

Well Jon left, but he's right. I'll explain below. Like the Monty Hall problem above our brains are sort of programmed to automatically translate the premise into "If I already had a son what are the odds my next kid is a daughter?" In that case Event 1 really has no bearing on Event 2, which has a 50/50 shot. This is really not what the problem is asking and is altogether different. Once again you have to look at the problem in sets. The possible sets of kids are: Boy Boy Girl Boy Boy Girl Girl Girl There are 3 sets of those combos that have a boy in them, of those 3 2 of them also have a daughter. Thus the woman has a 66.666% chance of having a daughter. |

Everytime you shuffle a deck of cards you can state, with near certainty, that no deck of cards in the history of mankind has ever been in that order. 52! = 80658175170943878571660636856403766975289505440883277824000000000000 possible decks. To put that number in perspective, it's roughly the same number of atoms scientists ballpark in the milkyway galaxy. Put 52! seconds on an egg timer: Pick out a spot on the equator. Walk around the world, taking one step every billion years. Everytime you reach your starting location, take a drop of water out of the Pacific ocean. Every time you empty the ocean, refill it, and place a piece of paper on the ground. When that stack of paper reaches the sun, reset everything. Do this process more than 3000 times. Edit: Each Trip around the world will take you 1.264e24 seconds (4.00545985e16 years), which is 3 million times longer than the current age of the universe, and you'll traverse the globe roughly 6.38x10^43 times. http://www.schuhmacher.at/weblog/52cards.html |
