Obama renews Patriot Act

I know a lot of people's heads will be spinning on this topic. Looking forward to finding out whether or not he will be crucified for this like GW was. Thoughts?

It always comes down to Partisan Politics, and I'm sure I'm not the only one sick of the two-faced bickering. Truth is, I doubt it will ever get any better. Two Presidents, each from different sides of the fence (and one who was elected partly on the fact he was anti- the other) and one is called Satan, another the New Jesus.

As far as the Act itself, it can be quite a bit overreaching and heavy handed, but there are parts to it that I don't necessarily mind. I feel that to get some security you have to be willing to give up some freedoms, but there are lines and limitations.

One other thing about this story.... The President is in France and couldn't physically sign the bill so they used an autopen to sign it. I'm not sure how prevalent this is when signing bills and the President is out of town, but I'm not sure I like it (and this isn't just an "I don't like it because Obama did it" thing, I think it would seem weird no matter who the President was).

explain this autopen thing. Like he signed it via the internet? or he gave his "ok" and someone stamped it? Or was it like a wax seal like the days of old?

I, for one, would use the autopen even if I didn't have to. Like if I was in the same room as the document, I would still hook up the autopen and sign away, just because I could.

Is the autopen like an auto tuner that makes rappers voices sound all crazy? Did obama's signature have some bling along with it after the autopen was finished signing?

The autopen is a machine into which you program your signature and then the machine can replicate it for signing letters, checks, etc. As far as I know, this is the first time a President has used it for signing a bill, but I may be wrong on that.

From what I can tell, Obama, in France, authorized someone back in Washington to put the pages of the bill into the autopen machine and "sign" the bill.

Actually, Grover Cleveland used it on two non-consecutive occasions.

Dissecting the joke:

Grover Cleveland was in an era with no computer technology, so he couldn't have used it
The "two non-consecutive" clause might fly over someone's head if they didn't know that he was president, then lost re-election, then ran again and one, hence being the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms.

Summary: a joke within a joke always makes the joke that much funnier!

Not necessarily... according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopen) the technology, in some form or another, has been around since 1803 and was used by Thomas Jefferson. Therefore, Cleveland could have used something like it in his day.

Note: I meant to link to the Wikipedia article in my previous post, but made a typo in the html (which I have now fixed), so the link didn't show up. All of which means Scott gets a pass for not knowing about the technological history of the autopen.

Actually, according to that article, Thomas Jefferson most likely used a device called a pantograph, which was more of a mechanical device. Similar in concept, in that you can make multiple signatures with one attempt, but still a different in the technology.

Note: Jefferson is depicted using the pantograph in the HBO series John Adams (which I highly recommend).
