Vikings Stadium

The Minnesota Legislature passed a bill roughly 10 years in the making that will build a stadium, and keep the Vikings in MN for the foreseeable future.

It's still not 100%, because it needs to clear the Minneapolis city council, but the votes were committed long ago, so barring a change of heart, it will pass, and be made official.

The plan is to start building in the lot next to the dome, and in other areas around it, so they can be a year or so in before they have to get the dome out of the way, thus eliminating an extra season that would otherwise be at TCF Bank Stadium.

I figure there's about 3-4 years of progress updates, sketches, articles, pictures, etc that are about to be coming our way. So, now we have a thread.

This is the latest plan, but everything is very fluid. The dashed line is the dome. The bill as passed is a fixed roof stadium, but leaves it open to the Vikings to upgrade it to a retractable roof. The Wilf family hasn't committed to that, because the price of it would depend on the stadium design, but all signs point to the fact that it would have to be very costly for them not to add that. They want to bring a MLS team to Minnesota, and have repeatedly hinted at it being open.

Boo! Save the Metrodome! I'm going to work night and day to make the Metrodome a certified historical landmark. If that doesn't work, I'll also be looking to find an endangered species that lives on the proposed construction grounds, or some sort of patch of wetlands that exists there or maybe I'll chain myself to a tree. Save the Metrodome! Stop the drilling! Stop the Oil!

Not to hijack the Vikings Stadium blog, I just didn't feel like this necessarily wanted a separate blog post. Afterall, the Vikings deal is a whole new stadium, this is just adding on to an existing stadium. Anyway, Here are a bunch of pictures of the renovation progress of Lambeau Field. Enjoy.

The Minneapolis City Council voted the stadium plan through originally 7-6. It's scheduled to be voted on again now that it's complete on the 21, 24, and 25th of May, 2012. (You know, they have a committee, then they vote if they should vote about voting, and all that jazz, then they finally vote for real.)

If one of the original 7 has a change of heart, everything would start all over, and have to wait a year for the next legislative session.

People are confident it will pass again, but the celebrating might be a tad premature.

I, for one, won't be too surprised if the Vikings lose out on a last second stomach punch. It's kind of par for the course at this point.

It would figure too, because Minneapolis has, time and time again, treated the Vikings like an infant treats a toy someone else wants. They want nothing to do with it, but throw a hissy when another county/city wants the Vikings enough to start to work out a plan, then use their political weight to crush the plan, and promptly go back to not being interested enough to make a deal.

So basically a billionaire from Los Angeles would only have to persuade one council member?

Also, the celebration is totally premature. I mean, in that animated .gif, Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson are celebrating, but who knows if they'll even be around to play in it if it does go through now? And how long is Ragnar under contract for that matter?
