Also, really A's? 10 million for Sheets? Obviously in baseball money isn't that important since it's not a fixed, immovable, percentage of your team, but still. Sure he was good in the three to six starts he pitched for the Brewers every year before getting hurt, but this time he's really hurt. He could be awful. Best case scenario seems like the 10 mil is just barely worth it. Maybe people just get that rabid when there's a potential difference maker at pitcher available, but I feel like this is one of those times where a team bid twice what the nearest competitor was actually willing to pay.

Really can't go wrong for $1.5M, but it definitely limits the bench, considering there's going to be a 12-man rotation, and Thome really can't play any position ever. But it's really nice to finally have a solid pinch hitter, plus after Crede last year this just has to piss off Sox fans everywhere. Plus it also gives them an option of benching Delmon if/when he sucks.

I liked Thome when he was a rookie, and have a boatload of his rookie cards in a box somewhere.

Especially the A's who have always seemed the low budget team. Sheets had one really good year in 2004 (cy-young-esque), striking out 264 batters with an ERA of 2.70 237 innings, so he does have that explosive ability at least. He didn't miss a start during 02, 03, or 04 seasons, but obviously he's had some injuries since then. He had 3 years of injury plagued season, and he was healthy all of 2008 except, of course, when it mattered most. In other words, looking at his games started now, he wasn't as unhealthy as I ever really realized (he pitched most of 05 and 07 and missed half of 06, but during that span, missed more than a years worth of starts nonetheless; my gut reaction was that he suffered injuries his entire career, which is at the very least an exaggeration), except that he is indeed coming off his worst injury yet. Anyway, there's a good chance he could make one start all year, and there's that chance he could return to 2008 form. I'm guessing it will fall somewhere in between. Either way, I'm surprised a team like the A's took that chance.

They got to see him pitch, reportedly hitting 92 and it's mid-January, and give him a physical. And as Scott said pointed out, his injury reputation grew bigger than the reality somewhat. Plus a full year off maybe gave him a chance to get 100% healthy for once. $10 million is significant chunk of cash, but there was reportedly a number of teams interested. The A's didn't wait for a bidding war to start, they made a strong offer in buyer's market and got him signed. I can think of 4 scenarios.
1) Injuries issues, wasted money
2) So-so year, no new contract
3) Good year, A's are out of the race in July so they trade him to a contender for picks/prospects
4) Good year, A's don't trade him and get picks when he leaves a free agent

The guy has a career 3.73 ERA, so personally I think 2 is highly unlikely. Scenario 1 is a risk, but 3 and 4 make the risk well worth it I think.

And one of the "injuries" that caused a significant amount of time loss was an inner ear infection that led to virtigo. That is just a freak condition that could have just as easily happened to me and caused me to miss work.

I think I might have mentioned it to Sarah, I don't know if I directly said anything to you. It started as intermittent mild dizzy spells that got worse for a few days, then 2-3 days of constant and severe dizziness where the only thing I could do was try and stay as still as possible and try and keep from vomiting (which was unsuccessful). After that, then the dizziness steadily declined over a few days.

The Twins are linked to a couple guys in the rumor market. Orlando Hudson and apparently, though he's already turned down one offer, Jarrod Washburn is said to only want to play for the Twins, or go back to Seattle.

Let's say we really went all out this year, and got the payroll up to around 110mil. (Adding a name at third as well, assuming there even is one anymore) Would we as fans automatically expect that forever? Is there an expectation that every subsequent year the minimum payroll is whatever the max of years past has been?

I think personally I'd be ok with going for broke the first couple years in the new stadium and seeing where that gets you.

Probably for some illogical reason, I always disliked Jim Edmonds. Maybe it was because for every unbelievable catch he made, a different centerfielder for any other team would have made the same catch standing up. In other words, he's slow. I guess I'll have to try to like him.

Orlando Cabrera is going to sign a one year, $3 million dollar deal with the Reds. I'm gonna miss that guy. Is that a lot of money considering how much we paid for Thome who probably won't play every game? I know we have JJ now, but couldn't Cabrera switched to 3rd, or couldn't JJ? I've probably already asked this a bunch, but it's just disappointing. It also appears like Crede will not be re-signed, which is ok considering all of his injury issues.

No more Bobby Keppel. He sure was crucial to Game 163. Apparently Liriano is lighting it up in the minor leagues, that would be awesome if he continued those ways back in the bigs.

I read that Cabrera signed with the Reds because they were the only team that didn't want him to switch positions. I am pretty happy, as Gardenhire would just bat him second and he can't get on base to save his life. With the lineup we have now I think there's a fair chance Mauer goes back to 2nd which would be fantastic. Otherwise I guess its Punto or Hardy, neither of whom makes me happy in the 2 spot.

Think we'll do Punto at third now? No matter who we put there isn't going to be an offensive juggernaut, so may as well be the best defensive guy left, right?

Also, kudos to the Twins for making good on the "build a stadium and we'll spend more money on the team" promise. It's possible that this is the "going for broke" I was talking about earlier, but I'm not so sure. (Most of the money is longer term.) They're at a projected 95 million and were at 66 last year, and haven't even signed Mauer yet. That's a huge increase. Lookout MLB!

Jim Caple thinks it's a bad idea. Honestly, I think he's overreacting. For the most part, Bud Selig is looked at fondly among Wisconsin people. He is the reason the Brewers exist in Wisconsin, and is probably the reason they stayed in Wisconsin. Caple makes it seem like the Brewers are trying to get a statue erected in Cooperstown. Who cares what outside people think of it. It's a monument for Wisconsin people and Brewer fans. I got my picture next to the statue of Curly Lambeau at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. I will probably stand next to a statue of Bud Selig for a picture too.

I did think it was strange when they annouced it, but he is sort of a pillar in Brewers lore, as sad as their lore is. And as owners go, it's not like he was some fat cat in new york who wanted a baseball team. He grew up in Wisconsin, and was into baseball. He brought a team to his hometown. So really, Wisconsin actually owes a bit of gratitude to him.

In other words, it's not like "oh, it's about time they put a statue up for him", because it is unusual to have a statue for your owner, I would think. But the fact that they are doing it shouldn't raise any questions of worthiness. I think each organization should have the right to decide who it wants to immortalize in bronze. In this case, Selig is an appropriate figure to commemorate, in my opinion.

Tickets for the exhibition games go on sale February 18th, we'll have to get some for the Saturday game.

So they've changed the date to Feb 23rd at 10 CST. Should find out tomorrow or Wednesday if we get the right to buy tix to the opening series!

I wonder if, in hindsight, Johnny Damon wishes he could sign that 2 year 14 mil contract with the Yankees. (He got one year for 8 from the Tigers a couple days ago.) Granted he made more this year, and 8 million could buy the entire city of Detroit, but I can't imagine him significantly upping his value. He's actually coming off of one of his best years (Granted, while inflating his numbers in a hitter friendly park) and teams weren't exactly jumping over themselves for the Lord of the Noodlearms.

As of right this second it worked out, and it's possible he just got caught in a suddenly budget-minded year, but I think this is one gamble he lost, as did Detroit because apparently he next highest bidder was the White Sox at 4.5 (which will also be a factor for Damon to deal with next year) and they also dumped Granderson on the Yankees, for money reasons, then signed Damon for more, at least this season.

So Brewer tickets went on sale today. And I was planning a Bachelor party for my brother-in-law to take place at the Phillies-Brewers game at Miller Park on Saturday May 15 (he's getting married May 23). Well, that game is sold out already before I got all the replies back from people I invited. So what about the earlier Saturday home games? Those are both sold out already too! It is the first time ever the Brewers sold out more than just the opening day game on the first day of ticket sales, and it just happens to be the one time I take on the responsibility of planning something around a Brewer game. Dang it!

I wish Twins tix would go on sale, but I think we have to wait until March 13th. I'm pretty sure every game will sell out in like the first couple of hours, so we should probably plan to buy all the games we want to go see on that day. Have fun at the bachelor party! I take it this means you can't go to Target Field the following week? I definitely want tix to that series!! Looks like the Rays are already selling tickets, Jeremy and I will have to start planning our trip!

It's not likely, but it's not impossible, especially since people might overreact and "horde" tickets like Sarah is saying we should. The Twins averaged 29,466 last year and Target Field only holds 39,504. They've sold 20,000 season tickets. (Not necessarily the whole season.) You're probably talking about only needing similar amounts of single game tickets to sell out.

Though of course there's also a BIG difference in every game ending up a sell out (ie You can get tickets fairly easily a week ahead of time, just don't plan on showing up day-of-game and buying them) and the entire season "sell[ing] out in like the first couple of hours"

The Brewers have had tons of sell-outs over the last several years (probably more than I would even guess), most of those probably becoming sell-outs due to walk-up ticket sales. Of course, I think they consider a game "sold-out" when there aren't any 2-consecutive seat spots left.

edit: 37+ Sellouts in 2008 alone. Game is considered a sell-out when there are only single seats or standing room only tickets available.

I read this about Mauer and Hardy the other day. I think it would be funny if these guys were hanging out some day and then ended up stopping by Jimmy John's before hitting the ballpark. They're laughing and having a good time, and then suddenly Justin Morneau walks in and things get really quiet and awkward.

If you have about 8 minutes or so to listen, Mike Golic and Erik Kuselias interviewed Mauer's agent a couple days ago. I found it interesting, but don't blame me if you don't.
The segment starts at about 7min 30 sec into it and the agent comes on at about 9 minutes in. Sorry if you don't have insider.

Contacts for contact

After being diagnosed as near-sighted at the start of camp, rightfielder Corey Hart was adamant about not wearing contact lenses. But weary of waiting for prescription sports glasses and looking awful at the plate, Hart has changed his mind.

"I thought they were going to be here (Monday), but crickets so far," said Hart, who tried regular eyeglasses but didn't like them. "So I'm getting contacts. I'm tired of not feeling good (at the plate). It's just more trying to find a comfort zone at the plate."

He is batting .154 after going 0 for 2 with a walk against Cleveland.

Denard Span fixed his vision a few years ago in the minors and has been on fire ever since. Though obviously it's not always going to work like that. Especially since Denard Span is 10 times the player Corey Hart is!
