Let's end that other monstrous MLB thread that takes forever to load and start a new one. Discuss the road to the playoffs, and the Twins' collapse to miss said playoffs, here.

The Brewers have lost 4 straight. Luckily everyone else near the top of the NL decided to take the first week of August off too so the Brewers have not lost ground to the Cubs and have not given up ground to the Phillies.

Sheets threw his third CG Shutout of the season. Brewers still have a 4.5 game laed in the wildcard, and trail the Cubs by 4 for the lead in the Central. The Cubs magic number is now 17, and the Brewers magic number is also 17 for the Wild Card.

I gave this a 0 rating, for unecessary salt-in-the-wound from someone who doesn't like baseball (person has noted that baseball is a wussy sport).

What I meant was, they almost made the playoffs last season, but lost it near the end. I was ok with it because they played meaningful baseball until the last 3 games of the season. if something like this happens two years in a row, after they rented Sabathia for half the season, that won't sit quite so well with me.

Well, with 16 games left and the Brewers still in the playoffs (if the season were to end today), I think the top brass realized that this is a now or never situation. They pulled the trigger for Sabathia in early July, and next year they could be without Sheets AND Sabathia. The Brewers are tied for the wild card right now, so they are technically still in the playoffs. At some point something had to shake things up, and apparently firing the manager was that thing. Buster Olney said that of all the MLB GMs, Doug Melvin was probably the least likely of all of them to make a move like this, so in his opinion it was very clearly thought out and probably has been brewing for a little while.

As a fan, I hope they know what they are doing. I've always liked Yost, but I'm a Brewer fan before I'm a Yost fan (or a Braun fan, or a Fielder fan). I'm also the type of fan who gives managers and GMs the benefit of the doubt on almost any case, so I will trust that Doug Melvin knows what he is doing.

Clearly there is risk involved, but here's how I break down the outcomes:
They keep Yost, they miss the playoffs, everyone calls for his head. They keep Yost, they make the playoffs, people are just moreso relieved, and he probably gets fired after the season. They fire Yost, they miss the playoffs, people figure they probably would have missed the playoffs anyway the way things were going. They fire Yost, they MAKE the playoffs, fans give Melvin the GM for life honor.

In other words, if the Brewers miss the playoffs after this, it doesn't change anything because they are on a pretty bad downward spiral. But, if the make the playoffs after this, Melvin looks like a genious. This is a gutsy move, but Melvin can ONLY come out on top in my opinion. I just hope that they make the playoffs.

An interesting thing about stories about managers is that no matter what the story is about (good or bad), the highlights of managers always include (and are usually limited to) the manager arguing with an umpire.

Is it really a risky move if Melvin can only come out on top?

I don't think it's quite that simple if they tank now and don't make it, Melvin at least takes a ding for it, maybe he still keeps his job though.

I really don't have anything against Yost, but it did seem like he'd taken this team about as far as he could.

You know, if anything this was the perfect excuse to fire Yost if they didn't want him long-term. Short-term, things were pretty bad so maybe this helps turn the team around, but if it doesn't Yost still isn't going to get much sympathy. But even if they thought Yost still had a chance to lead them to playoffs, maybe they didn't want to bring him back next year and by not giving him the chance to save the season and make a deep post-season run, they effectively stomped out that controversy before it started. Lets hope they stomped real hard and didn't dance around like the Packers did getting rid of Favre.

It's risky I guess in the sense that they may tank without Yost, but they also might not. It's risky because nothing like this has EVER happened. No team has ever fired their manager this late in the season while STILL in a playoff position.

They are on Fox tomorrow. So are the Brewers. Unfortunately, the Twins play the Rays, so the Brewers probably won't be carried down here, and because they are on Fox I won't be able to watch them on MLB.TV. Oh well, Sabathia will win, and the pitching matchup looks to favor the Braves over the Mets, so that would help the Brewers.

Go Rays, White Sox, Brewers, Braves, and Marlins. Man, playoff runs create strange allegiances.

I'm still trying to figure out where this deep animosity towards the Brewers comes from. I mean, they haven't won anything ever, they are on a very long stretch of being a threat to anyone, and now they have a chance to make the playoffs in a different league of the team that you apparently follow.

I'm watching the Rays-Twins game right now. Things don't look good for the Twins. While I have grown a bit towards wishing the Rays well, I normally would be hoping the Twins could pull it out (but for one un-named NutCanner).

No matter how good/bad/ugly the Brewers are, baseball is never stupid.

In other news, the Brewers won, the Mets lost, Brewers are 1.5 games behind NY for the wild card spot. The Mets have a 4 game series against the cubs and the Brewers have a 3 game series against the Pirates. I hope the Cubs don't take it easy now that they've won the division.

Must be election season, because taken in context (of this thread, of other baseball threads, of this site in general) it's fairly obvious that I was just upset about the Brewers losing again.

Taken in the context of the general conversation of this thread, the assumption was not far off the mark.

At any rate, the real final push in the fantasy league is going down to the wire and getting no press at all. Will 1st half dominating Meow hold on to a precarious lead after an improbable comeback to reclaim it from the 2nd half dominating Hibbleton? The last weeks have seen a couple 3-5 point swings in a day and there is currently only 1 point separating the two teams!!!

I was dead last, then traded Jeter to Micah- got as high as 3rd then crashed again.

Is this what we can anticipate?

Both the Twins and Brewers have elimination numbers of 5. (Brewers for wildcard, Twins for division) The Twins have to be especially careful because theirs goes down by 2 with a loss in the next couple games. (Though, obviously wins "count double" as well.)

Grand Slam in the bottom of the ninth to win it, not that impressive? I suppose rallying from 5 runs down is pretty impressive, but a GS is always impressive. Especially from a guy who can barely swing a bat because of a strange ribcage ailment. So there.

It comes down to this: The Brewers have 3 games against the Cubs and the Mets have 3 games against the Marlins. In reality, this is a "play-in" series.

It would, but a grandslam is a grandslam, and a grandslam in the 9th inning, regardless of the score, is cool. Yes, being down by 3 runs would increase the exciting value on the "sport-excitement scale", whereas a walk with the bases loaded with the score tied, while still producing the same results (a win), would register less exciting. I created an "excitometer" to measure these sorts of things, but I can't upload it now. Then we won't have to debate the excitement of certain events, because the meter will tell us.

I agree.

Also, one of the coolest sports moments I ever watched in person was a walkoff grandslam. The Eau Claire Express were down by one run in the bottom of the 10th in the middle of a playoff chase and Dominic Piazza (no relation to Mike) hit a grand slam into the pine trees in right field of Carson Park. It was amazing. It was the first grandslam in the team's history too, so that was cool.

Indeed. It would be very beneficial for the Brewers and CC if the Brewers would clinch today. If CC must pitch on Sunday, then he most likely would only get to pitch once in the divisional series. However, if he did not have to pitch, he would be available for game 1 and potentially game 4 or 5.

Ok, the "friendly banter" should hopefully bow to the totally euphoria that some of us are feeling.

Seriously though, the Brewers might have well just won the World Series that's how excited I still am. However, With Gallardo and Sabathia pitching game 1 and 2, I'm pretty confident that the Brewers will put up a worthy fight. Honestly, I expect them to win this battle. The Phillies are good, no doubt, but they only finished a game or two better than the Brewers. They have a potent offense, but the so do the Brewers. I'm not going to analyze this series, but I just want in on the action. I think only the Super Bowl victory for the Packers matches this level of excitement for me.

We're NOT DONE YET!

I didn't even know they made Wild Card hats. But I supose if you haven't made the playoffs in 26 years, it's nice to have something. Now onto the Twins game today.
It kind of sucks that even though the Twins won the head to head series against the Sox, 10-8, that they now have to play in Chicago to decide this thing. A coin toss determined that a bout a month ago. The Twins played this long baseball season and finished in a tie for first only to have a coin toss possibly decide thier fate. On the other hand they only have thier sevles to blame, one more win vs KC and we would be talking about the series agains the Rays.
I am not overly confident in a Twins victory tonight given the circumstances, but I hope they can pull it out, it would suck to have the season end this way.

In the previous 4 division titles since 2002, the Twins were always the agressor, they got a lead in the division and kept on winning. This year, the division was theirs for the taking. The Tigers were awful from the start, Cleveland gave up in May and the Sox were playing as mediocre as ever. The Twins didn't jump on the chance, and let the divsion slip away. Blackburn pitched like an all star and the Offense couldn't pick him up. Morneau should definitly not win the MVP. He picked the worst time to start slumping.

I like the starters for next year, but they need signifigant upgrades in the bullpen. And better players at 3B and SS.

Seriously though, I was talking to Matt yesterday about how quickly the postseason can unfold. You go through this 162ish game season and then game one happens, then you haven't even digested it fully and boom, game two and next thing you know you're close to elimination. I remember when the Twins were in and not doing so well last time, and I could barely believe how quickly things happened.

Well, there's no reason that ALL rounds of the playoffs shouldn't be best of seven, They play a 162 game season, why make the first round of the playoffs be a best of five series? It's a decision that can't be defended. The rest of the playoffs is best of 7. So you can lose 3 straight games in the playoffs and still win it all, just make sure it's in the second round? It's just wrong.

I do enjoy how shocked people are at how improbable coming back from down 0-2 is. Even if you were flipping a coin there's only a 12.5% chance. Much less when you consider that let's say the order of who's home and who's away was randomly scrambled. There's still likely going to be a trend there because, while flukes happen, it stands to reason that if a team wins the first two they're just the better team. On top of THAT these aren't random. It's a seeded playoff system, and the better team opens at home.

Just wait till next year...winning season, then making playoffs, next year has to been winning the 1st round, then year after that getting to World Series and year after that finally a World Series victory.

The Brewers are up to 15th in payroll and clearly spending more money doesn't guarantee anything but there's no reason that they can't remain competitive. 10 years ago they really needed to catch lightening in a bottle but I think success could be less fleeting for them nowadays.

Most likely Sheets and Sabathia are gone. Sabathia was huge in getting them to playoffs this year, but they were doing good before they traded for him too so it's not the end of the world. Plus they went almost the whole year without Yovani. He's fully capable of replacing what they have gotten from Sheets out of the last 3 years. So there's your borderline ace without even having to trade (even though they should have propects to spare after getting 4 extra 1st round picks).

It looks like most of the team will be some sort of free-agent or arbitration eligible or something according to this site: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/milwaukee-brewers.html. So they'll probably have to give raises to some guys but they should have some money left over as well to pick up some pitchers. Or else they might have to trade a young position player for pitching (like Prince). It will certainly be an interesting offseason for them.

Also, let it be fully noted in the annals of the Nutcan that the Cubs fell even harder then the Brewers in the postseason. That's something of a consolation prize anyway.

And on the basis of mainly this thread, I hope the Tigers get their underachieving selves together next year and along with the division champion WSox, surprising Royals, and the Cliff Lee's pound the snot out of the Twins.

And even though I'm sure no one cares, here's my order of rooting for the remaining teams: Phillies (for Jenkins), Rays (for underdogs, and Longoria was good for my fantasy team), White Sox (for Griffey), Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox (the evil empire's twin brother)

Well, I didn't mean to "take a shot," it's just that without Sheets and Sabathia, that's going to hurt them. It's obviously possible that they are still going to be contenders in their division without them. (See Twins Re:Santana and Hunter)

It's just that is takes a Sabathia to take a team to the next level.

At any rate, there's also a sizable chance that this was the season the window that the Brewers had been building towards for a few years now was open, they mortgaged their future a bit, and lost, and now that window could slam shut.

Regardless of your intentions, you kicked when we were down. Best me in a fair fight and you'll get nothing but respect. Pour salt in my open wounds and become my mortal enemy. Plus, in this case, you're guilty by association anyway.

I will concede that they may need to take a step backward next year, because they could have massive roster changes by opening day. But if nothing else at least they can rebuild around Braun, who is signed long term at a reasonable price and who is probably the best player they've had since Yount.

Go Angels.

You know what's kind of strange? (But likely not interesting to many, so don't complain)
Way back in the earlier days of the popularized internet, back in the mid to late 90's, Matt and I logged on to a web chat, or online chat or live chat, or whatever they used to call it when a celebrity would talk to us commoners online, to talk to Twins manager Tom Kelly.

At some point, someone asked him who the best player he managed was. He gave a full answer, but basically said Kirby Puckett. But he talked about how good Molitor was too. But at the end he said he'd have to go with Puckett. And then he finished with almost those exact same words. But I think it might have been, "That Molitor guy isn't too bad either" or something like that.

Anyway, Matt submitted a question too, and it got asked and answered. Tom Kelly even said, "good question," actually, I think he may have said, "very good question." It was about Terry Steinbach coming to the Twins and what that would add to the team or something like that.

We were so proud and excited that we printed off some of the chat and posted it up by the computer. So for years, I would see that quote about Puckett and Molitor when I would use the computer. So when I saw Scott's quote, I thought for a second it was a reference to that before realizing that you had no knowledge of it in the first place, so it probably wasn't a reference to that at all.

I feel like if I looked long and hard enough, I might be able to track down that chat in some form or another. Then we could all be fulfilled.

I listened to the 9th and 10th with the TV on and my eyes closed last night but the sleep timer kicked in at midnight and I couldn't fight back the sleep any longer. The Rays won in the 11th, but at the rate they were going that inning probably didn't end until 2 in the morning so I'm ok with missing it. Came up with another reason to root for the Rays, Gabe Gross always seemed like a good guy when he was on the Brewers.

It ended at about 12:30. I ended up watch the last inning and a half. I'm just happy the Rays won. I was flipping channels at like 11:40 and didn't understand how the game was still in the 9th. Didn't it start at 7? Must've been some slow trots around the bases for all those homeruns?

I think its safe to say that the Rays come out the winner of the big trade with the Twins last winter. Watching Matt Garza pitch his second good start and carry his team to the World series kind of hurts. It would have been nice to have him on the Twins staff this year. Delmon Young better turn out to be 40 hr guy next season.

It's also dumb that a summer game plays it's most important games of the year in a winter enviroment. They need to add some double headers during the season, push the end of the season up a couple weeks to avoid this.

From the Neshek story:

"When Neshek was first injured in May, he received a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, who agreed with the Twins recommendation to rehab the injury, instead of having surgery."

Now it's probably just a case of "we only hear about things when they go wrong, not when they go right", but doesn't it seem like the rehab option almost never works? You might as well just get the surgery right away and save yourself some trouble.

More like "moral" dividends, which is similar to a moral victory. Because he then went on to win the Cy Young.

Well, there's no other obvious choices. ESPN has David Riske listed as their closer right now, he managed to stay healthy for 42 innings last year and blew 5 while saving 2 with a 5.31 ERA. Out of the other free agents Alan Embree has closed some, Mota has tried and mostly failed. So unless they trade for someone they can either start with a proven guy who is getting old or wing it with someone and hope to get Turnbow lucky without the Turnbow eventual supernova.

Mota has not "mostly failed" he probably had a couple of rough stretches, but to just claim that he "mostly failed" is not accurate at all. He gave up a total of 3 runs in August and September. And other than a rough month of July, he was by far the Brewers most consistent guy in the bullpen. Now I wouldn't necessarily want him to be what we rely on as our closer, but he is a very good asset in the bullpen.
