Fantasy Football League

The baseball season is halfway over and there's just a little over a month 'til the first pre-season game, so let's start thinking about football! I set up a fantasy football league again on Yahoo:
ID: 156203 password: milhouse
This is for people who are actually going to participate only (ahem... Carl).
The settings are SALY, but if you want anything changed, let's discuss. Also, I didn't know when to do the draft so I picked a random day.
Good times will be had by all, especially by me when I win it all.
Enjoy.

By the way. Carl, you are of course invited, what she means is if you're going to sign up try to pay attention you your team until at least week 3. (Ideally the entire season)

Sorry. My bad. Micah's link worked fine though, I checked it last night though.

Carl's baseball team had upside if he would've bothered to have done anything with it. Leaving Morneau on the bench for the first half of the first half hurt. Leaving an MVP candidate on your bench the whole time hurt (ordonez). And having people start who aren't even on a team really hurts. I'm just saying. Maybe he should drop his whole team again and I can reap the rewards... j/k.emoticon

This isn't so much ff related, but it is f related. There is ranking of teams WR talent on ESPN.com. The interesting part is insider only, so I'm going to break the suspense and mention that GB was ranked 28 (seemingly solely because of Driver) and Minnesota was ranked 32. First line of that section, "This is the worst group of wide receivers in the league and there is a good chance that Minnesota's passing game will be awful this season."

We didn't lose to her, we just collectively decided that your players were "off limits" after you cut them. Then she decided later on that didn't apply to her and picked half of them up anyway. It didn't really help her all that much though, there was a reason you cut that team. emoticon

I find it hard to believe the Packers are that low. Driver and Jennings seem like a decent 1-2 punch. The Vikings WR are so low for the same reason they ranked #30 in QB. They are mostly unknowns and what little is known isn't good. Rice could be good. Williamson, who has proved he has no problem getting open, met with a team of doctors that diagnosed and fixed a legitimate hand-eye-coordination problem, so he could do ok too.

That said I don't know who you could possibly argue should be lower on the list, and there's a better than good chance they will stink. Their RB's are ranked #7 though.

You pick them if you are available at the given time. Otherwise, prerank them and it will automatically pick for you when it's your turn. A move is picking up a player as a free agent or off of waivers. 45 is plenty, but we can discuss changing it.

Actually I didn't quote the wrong comment, because my first sentence directly applies to the quoted comment. To be totally correct, I should have then also quoted the next comment before my second sentence, but I assumed everyone would be able to figure out the correlation.

And I agree, I should talk about making lots of moves because I have the most experience.

What's with the quotes on that last part?

This has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, so I apologize before I even say anymore but I'll feel much better after this.

Me and my roomie were playing pool at the bar, and we lost to 2 other guys and after the game I said they got a litte lucky becuase they got 2 balls in on the shot before the 8 ball, and they never called it. That's all I said. And apparently those were fighting words, becuase they got all pissed and one of the dudes knocked my roomies beer out of his hand. And I told to him to just forget those guys. So then my roomie gave me crap for backing down, which just makes me even more pissed off. Bars are retarded. [Drunk sentences deleted]

And since I just noticed the previous edit, that Chocolate rain song sucks. But it is raining here. "Used to rap to the raindrops off my window pane...At the kitchen table late night, no pen, just my brain..."

And it should be, "I actually equate it TO Barry Bonds joining T-Ball", not "as".

And the Brewers rock. I totatlly called P. Fields back-to-back before the pitch was thrown. Stupid pool. emoticon

Ok. Here's my dilemma in my family's keeper league.

Keep 3:

Joseph Addai (Ind - RB)
Ronnie Brown (Mia - RB)
Marc Bulger (StL - QB)
Travis Henry (Den - RB)
Torry Holt (StL - WR)
Darrell Jackson (SF - WR)
Brandon Jacobs (NYG - RB)
Laurence Maroney (NE - RB)
Deuce McAllister (NO - RB)
Donte' Stallworth (NE - WR)
Brian Westbrook (Phi - RB)
Kellen Winslow (Cle - TE)
Vince Young (Ten - QB)

Addai is an auto keep and I'm inclined toward keeping 3 running backs. Which two do I keep out of Westbrook, McAllister, Maroney, Jacobs, and Brown? Should I hold on to Vince young and hope for big things later down the road? Westbrook is probably a good choice for this year, but does he have as much long term value? (And who's to say we don't quit this league in 2 years.)

what do you all think?

Forget Vince.

Are you just going for continuing competiveness (Brown and Maroney or Jacobs) or is playing to win this year (Brown and Westbrook). I'd almost replace Westbrook with Bulger, there aren't many "locks" for good QBs this year, and Westbrook has trouble staying healthy.

You know I wasn't even thinking about keeping Henry, now I see he's listed above most of those guys.

And to answer Alex: I purposely "aimed for the future" last year, at the expense of last year, so it would be sort of silly to let those young guys go now, but obviously I want to do well. (4th last year)

Westbrook can't stay healthy, which leads to the "Will he/wont he" game you get wrong 3 times a year. He's also old, so "keeper" wise his value is lowered. The problem is he puts up fantasy points like a man possessed when he actually plays.

I assumed Maroney was a no brainier too. Then everything I've read says otherwise. I also feel like I can get a "Bulger" later on. I mean I got him in like the 7th round last year and it's not like he lit the world on fire last year to dramatically increase his value.

I was about to tell them I want Addai, Maroney, and Westbrook, but I forgot I had Ronnie Brown, Duece (who I don't think I'm keeping) and that I stashed away Henry as an after thought who is now like #9 on some lists.

Well, it's not like I'm arguing I should keep my kicker instead of Bulger. I only brought up the list because I had never even thought of keeping Henry, and before I asked Joe if he was kidding or not I went to see where he fell in the minds of "experts", and it turns out people are expecting him to have a career year.

Also we sort of stopped talking abut Jacobs, who could put up some numbers as well.

Ok, so according to yahoo they had server problems or some stupid shit so while they weren't remembering anything, they let us go through with the whole damn thing.

I don't know about you guys but I don't want to redo this. I feel like it would mess with the "integrity" of the league too much. Everyone already knows what everyone else is doing. Everyone has already been made fun of for picking stupid picks.

How many players can we remember?

I had (in the order they come to me)

S Alexander
Ronnie Brown
Ben Watson
Jason Hanson
Allen Rossum
Dallas
Bobby Wade
LaMont Jordan
Larry Fitzgerald
Calvin Johnson
Laveranues Coles
Tatum Bell
Kevin Jones
Michael Clayton

Not Sure about these guys:
Amani Toomer
Ashley Lelie

I also feel like I'm forgetting someone I took fairly high.

Now as for other poeple I sort of remember.
Carl had Manning and Gates
Packone had TO
Jon took Jerrico Cotchery
Larry Johnson went 2nd??

Oh and I picked 5th, Sarah was #1, and Alex was #6

e: At the very least I think setting the draft order to the same order as last night and trying to come up with as many rounds as we can remember is the best way to go. I think our "big guys" should certainly be the same.

Yeah, but what if 2 people who were at the "real" draft can't make it tonight, or don't notice it didn't "take"? That's not fair either. (And really, more unfair) Maybe there's nothing that can be done about it, but if everyone can remember virtually every pick they made and it comes down to you and Carl drafting from what's left (ie the players you likely had), I think I like that better than the alternative, even though it sounds counter intuitive.

We certainly have to get the order the same, so everyone at least state where you were picking.

(I think Carl also had Jamal Lewis)

Why the hell did they let us draft if it wasn't remembering anything? Why are there no fail safes in place? Even if they let us copy/save the chat, which I've always wanted anyway, we would be set. Do we have any recourse against them considering it's a free product?

We have so little time I'm not sure what to do at this point. I know that doesn't help much.
It would be odd to redraft, and probably unfair. I'm sure most people can remember the main players and probably decipher who else they picked from who's left. Of course, I know some people are in like eight leagues so it might be hard to remember, but even if 75% remember, that should (hopefully) be enough to say, "hey you didn't pick phillip rivers, I did"

Other than that, is there some sort of commissioner function that can delegate the players to someone's team? Otherwise I guess if we all just ranked our players we drafted as our top 16 that would work. I think it would.

The commish can shuffle players on already existing teams, or tell yahoo it's a "manual" league draft and set all the players.

Either way I'm thinking the teams have to be complete.

In my mind I don't care about the guys we all got in round 16, even if some of them go on to a big year. I just don't like the idea of starting over. If we can all remember the main guys I'm ok with going forward. All those other guys are largely interchangeable anyway.

By the end there it was down to drafting team's 3rd wide out.

OK, this seems to be coming together a bit. We'll see where it is after Joe, Tony, Kyle, and Micah weigh in.

I hope it doesn't seem too unfair toward PackOne and Carl, but I think it's more fair to "put out" the teams that weren't there and don't remember than redo it and have half the league potentially not there.

So far everyone seems pretty confident in their teams and we have had no overlap as near as I can tell.

I looked at Carl's team an awful lot. Maybe once the names get whittled down I'll remember more.

Edit: Plus' both teams would have more or less followed the "best of whos left" approach.

ok.... now yahoo says this on our league page:

Please note before resuming your draft that we have preserved the most recent draft order for your league as well as 12 completed rounds of picks. We realize live drafts are difficult to coordinate and apologize for any inconvenience the interruption in service has caused your league.

Sooooo do we all meet and pick up where we left off after 12? Do we try and stick to who we think we did take and stay away from who others are pretty sure they did take?

Ok, if you go to our Yahoo fantasy football team homepage, go to players, player list, sort by and then sort by your name. You can see who you've taken through 12 rounds. That just means we're missing the remaining 4 rounds. So, what should do as of that point? Go through with the draft and pick the players we did last night? I don't know what will happen if we say no to the draft, if we will then have to manually enter in our picks for all 16 rounds.

Tom Brady
Marshawn Lynch
Warrick Dunn
Chris Cooley
Greg Jennings
Donald Lee
Green Bay
Justin Harrell
Ben Roethlisberger
Shayne Graham
Santana moss
TJ Duckett
Mark Clayton (?)

2 missing.

If everyone can remember the bulk of their team like Sarah and I did, and there are no major conflicts, I think we could piece together what happened. Especially if everyone can give us their draft order and anyone of consequence.

I also have Braylon Edwards and Wes Welker. That completes my team.

I know you picked Rice too because I forgot about him and may have taken him, then you declaired him the SOD.

So adding in these 3:

Stephen Gostkowski
Shawne Merriman

That would make your whole team.

I don't like this setup. I like a head to head league myself. What I really don't like is the fact that you can pick up guys during games. Every player should be put on waivers at the end of the week until Wed. This evens it out a little better and makes a much more fair game.

No but (and I'll put this in true nutcan form) If player A gets hurt mid-game, and his replacement player B looks to be a starter the next week, then the first person to rush to the site can pick him up right away for future use. That is why placing all players on waivers at the start of the first game and locking them till tuesday lets everyone have a shot at free agents. This evens the field and lets all teams make a decision on their priority players for the next week. Otherwise why have a waiver wire?

I don't like head to head, because you could have a great, terrific, fantastic week, but the person you're playing against has a great, terrific, fantastic week +1. You would've beaten every other person in your league that week except that person. Meanwhile, other people are winning because the people they're playing against haven't paid attention for that week.

Yeah, head to head is really only good because you always feel like you have a fresh start each week, but it's just such a flawed system in most other ways I think. Going against another team for one randomly chosen week is almost like going against a random number generator. I mean, on average, good teams will have good records, but why not just go with a system that cuts out the "on average"? Total points means your 125 points counts even if two other guys scored 127 and 130 that week. In the head to head league the schedule generator just picks random weeks to screw you or not screw you.

And you can't argue the whole "they go head to head in real life" thing and convince me of any such idea. Because those are teams going against each other that actually affect what the other team does. And conciously do so. Fantasy does not offer the same situation. I can't make any of my players go for a td pass because jeremy's player's have conspired together to score 4 more points this week. And they won't switch stadiums to tackle any of his players either.

When do I win anything? I lit it up this year! Plus, I'm doing well in picks. I need someone to give me props -and it looked like it had to be me.

It was a fun league, even though I lost third place on the last day. I don't see a reason to play week 17, since its a crapshoot trying to figure out who will play and who won't. Maybe a 15 or 16 week season would be better.
The only other thing I didn't like was that no one had a chance for first after like week 8 beacause one team totally dominated. I would like to see some type of playoff scenario to award the teams in the top 4 or so.

Or we could play head to head like every other fantasy football league in the universe (although Sarah probably still would have won)
