I started a blog on my myspace page. But I set that to private so that's not too helpful for anyone except Jeremy. So basically all I said on there was that Blake's 311 rendition was the worst ever even though he says they're his favorite group. |

They did 311 and Pearl Jam in the same night. The Pearl Jam song was the first, and hopefully last, time I watched any American Idol post everyone going to Hollywood. I used to watch back in the "half the people suck, and don't know it, tryout days" but now even that sucks because people go on to purposely suck and get on TV now. |

Also it does seem weird that they covered 311 on American Idol. It was "All Mixed Up" right? Did the guy rap the versus? It doesn't seem like Idol's cup of tea. Of course for all I know they do gansta rap weekly on the show. Edit: They should have covered "Brodels" who as I understand it are "the naz," who know where "it's at." |

Of all the Pearl Jam songs, though, I wouldn't have picked "Jeremy" to show off my voice (no offense to the NutCan member who shares the name of the song). Better Man would probably have been a better song for that. But what do I know. |

The guy that did 311 is actually good at like beatbox or whatever you call that, so he rapped/sang/beatboxed the song in some really strangely modified arrangement of verses. |

You all just opened up a forum for me to professionally break down american idol. I actually wasn't paying really close attention to it this year until the last couple weeks, but now I'm in it until they inevitably screw up the voting and send the best people home. I liked the Blake 311 performance. Plus, even if you hated it, the guys are all so mediocre, you almost have to admit that it ended up being one of the top three performances for the night. Also, it's really not that strange for any song to be performed on idol at this point. It's still mostly a traditional singing/pop singing thing but there are different styles and the really good ones can pick just about any song. Here's who I like in the competition. The former backup singer (I can't remember her name, maybe I'll learn it), and Jordin Sparks, and LaKisha is pretty good too. The short haired girl seemed ok too, she could work her way up. Basically the girls are pretty good. The guys, well, Chris Sligh is funny and he sings ok. I like Blake a lot actually but I could see the beatbox thing getting old or screwing him up in other styles. Almost like how Bucky last year could only sing the southern rock screaming songs so anytime he had to do something else, he just did it in that style and it was awful. Blake is way more talented than Bucky in my opinion though so don't think I'm comparing them in talent. Anyway, Blake is probably the most entertaining. That's how I see things at this point. It can change though once you see who can actually perform week after week. |

The guys are terrible, so Blake being one of the best on the night is not saying much at all. I guess to get technical about it, he did a decent job of performing, I just hated the arrangement. I actually voted last week for the girls at least. I voted for Sabrina because you pretty much have to vote for anyone who sings En Vogue. And I voted for Gina. |

I haven't voted yet this year, but I voted a lot last year until Chris got voted off and I didn't care anymore. Don't be all judgemental about voting Jeremy. I used to be all "too cool" to actually vote but all it takes is a few talented people to get voted off way too early to realize that if you want to keep the talent on, you have to do your part. It keeps the shows good. If I could call in a few votes that would keep the Office from doing stupid episodes like the wedding one, I would do it. It's the same concept. |

Chris and Blake are the 2 guys that I think are the best. For those of us who care about this sort of thing, I'm pretty sure Chris is a Christian and he has already sang a DC Talk song as well as a Mute Math song (both Christian groups). I like Jordin Sparks, but Lakisha is definitely the favorite. I'm waiting for one of the judges to say this (probably Simon), but I think that Lakisha is possibly the best contestant that the show has ever had, period. I think I like the sound of some of the guys' voices a little better, I hope Lakisha wins. She is just in another league. |

Jeremy, my point is that if you're going to invest the time watching, you might as well vote if you care one way or the other. If you're indifferent then I guess voting isn't a huge deal. For those without a Neilson box, it might be the closest you get to directly influencing the product on the television. If you want to be glass half empty about it and say you're just trying to make it not suck, that's fine, it's really not the point. Plus it's an 866 number which is toll free so I'm only paying with my time which according to my employer isn't that vauluable anyway. Vauluable? that's the british version of the spelling. For Simon Cowell. |

What's funny about this Blog is that I was a little bit leary of posting about American Idol for fear of being made fun of or that no body would care. In spite of being the most popular show on television, there is still some sort of "Holy crap, you watch American Idol?" sort of stigma. But as it turns out, I'm not the only one who felt this way. |

Friends can listen to "Endless Love" in the dark. Here's what I don't get. The judges harp on the contestants about not being original, they say the contestants should make these songs their own. So Chris Sligh makes Endless Love his own and he gets slammed for it. He did exactly what they had told him for the last 3 weeks and they slammed him when he did it. I felt that he was indeed the best vocalist of the night. |

I actually have it about half done. But I haven't had time to work on it in the last two days. Seriously. Unless you count the time I've spent watching the tournament, which would be ridiculous of you to count. This one is actually pretty fun to write. Reading it, however, will be a chore I'm sure. Also, at first I wasn't liking Chris' performance, but by the middle to end I realized I really liked it. It wasn't the best of the night though. I liked most of the girls. |

Tonight, I thought that Phil Stacey was perhaps the best. Blake was good too. The usual good gals LaKisha and Melinda were probably still good, but they weren't exciting enough to keep me from spacing out. I liked Jordin Sparks as usual. |

Phil was a copycat of Sting. I think Phil performed very well, but the judges have criticised contestants multiple times for being copycats of the artists for which they were performing, and I don't think you could have gotten any more copycat than what Phil did with the Police song. I liked his performance, but I if you are going to say that one person is a copycat, you have to call them all that way and this one was obvious. I liked Blake, Chris Sligh struggled but I think he's done enough to allow for one bad performance, Lakisha is falling on my Power Rankings, Melinda was good, and she finally got rid of that "who me?" attitude and started accepting some compliments like she knew they were coming. I didn't not like Jordin Sparks' performance. She just seemed off. I hope either Chris Richards or Hailey gets voted off. I like Hailey but she's not all that strong. I don't like Chris Richardson, voice or personality. Blake is my frontrunner. |

Agree with most of that. The judges are constantly contradicting themselves, nothing new there. I actually liked Phil's performance for once. What I will disagree with is Blake. I'm starting to think it's just me because the judges liked it too, but I thought he was borderline atrocious. Maybe I just like 311 too much to give a fair shake to someone who keeps crappily doing 311 songs. |

Also, what they are saying about Blake is that he insists on doing his own thing for every song, but his own thing is becoming too much the same each time. Every song has been to a fairly mellow beat and laid back arrangement. While his song last night might have been "boring", the overall vocals and performance were still pretty good in my opinion, and Simon's too apparently. |

I think it's because he sounds like how I think I sound after 4 beers and soberly I have to think that I'm not the greatest singer, therefore Blake sucks in my mind. He did All Mixed Up and then Lovesong last night, which I guess was originally a Cure song (don't think I know that version) but it was also covered by 311 and they got a #1 hit out of it (soundtrack of 50 First Dates). And since he said before that he liked 311 alot I assumed that was his inspiration. |

Ok, so I might still watch, but America is stupid. Hailey has nice legs I guess, but very little singing ability. Chris Richardson is just plane unbearable in my opinion. Phil has literally had one good performance (last night) this entire competition. Chris Sligh has had 1, exactly 1 less than good performances (last night) and he's gone. America is dumb, there I said it. |

Scott are you voting for sanjaya because you think he's the best or for other reasons? Actually, I'm not sure it matters, since my next point is valid either way. You seem pretty upset about Chris Sligh going home because you think he deserves to be there because you say he's one of the strongest singers, yet you vote for Sanjaya!! Maybe Florida is the right state for you. You can all call in votes for Pat Buchanan this week. Anyway, I liked Chris Sligh most weeks, but he wasn't going to be the winner in my mind. Once you're in the top ten I'm not sure it makes a huge difference when you go home (aside from the winner). I guess it depends on what you consider huge. If you stay around it's more exposure and more fun and better for your self esteem maybe. But it's not like he gets an automatic record deal if he finished a few spots higher. That only goes to the winner as far as I know. As for the other Chris, I've never been much of a fan either. Here's how I see things. Basically, Sanjaya winning would be pretty ridiculous in my mind. That's the only real outcome that renders the show a complete disaster. Phil and Chris R. winning would be bad, but you could chalk it up to a taste thing. I haven't written either off completely, but I'm not big on either one at this point. Though I do like Phil sometimes. I would also be really surprised if Haley or Gina wins. But there's a market for whatever product they're putting out, so it's not without some "merit" if they win. The real contestants start with Blake and Jordin. Then Melinda and LaKisha are a step up in the top tier as far as their singing I think. Of course, if you add in the entertainment/excitement/"star" component, those four become really close in my mind since Blake and Jordin are generally more interesting to watch and come across as a bit more youthful. |

I don't Think Sanjaya is one of the worst, so in a sense, I am trying to "vote people off" by not voting for someone, rather than voting only for the person I think is the best. Melinda and Lakisha are becoming limited in my opinion. Lakisha has seemed to struggle the last couple of weeks and that's because she is forced to sing other songs that Mo-town like stuff. I'll comment more on this later, but Blake is my front runner, and Gina I think is a bit of a sleeper, especially recently. |

Jon, your addition of the entertainment/excitement/"star" component is worth 4 nuts. My thing with Sanjaya is that while he is not the best singer necessarily, if I had to choose between him and Chris R. and Phil, I would choose Sanjaya. Haley's not all that good either. I think she's trying to win the competition with her legs. |

Yeah, Haley is definitely using her attractiveness for her advantage. I assume it's a consious decision, and if not, then she's probably one of those girls who makes every guy she talks to think she's into them without realizing it. For me, she's kind of nearing the line of being too overt with it. Which I think could hurt her in some people's view, but at the same time, will probaly just get a bunch of guys to call in even more. Guys are stupid that way. Myself included. Not that I voted for her. But the general concept is not something I'm immune to. Even if I am asexual. (I reproduce via sporing.) As for the rest of the show this week, I think basically everyone performed about how I would expect, with the exception of Chris R who I surprisingly enjoyed (yes, even before the judges gave it good marks). Aside from that, Melinda and LaKisha were excellent, as was Jordin. Blake was ok, but I didn't think it was anything special. Phil and Haley had their moments but were just ok overall. I have always gotten a weird vibe from Phil because you can hear that he's got talent but his sound sometimes has a tone that's not appealing or something. I can't quite figure it out. But I like to give him the benefit of the doubt. Sanjaya has some singing talent, but it seems to me like every time he performs, he's singing like he's in a choir with a hundred other people in it and he's not sure of himself. He consistently gets overshadowed by the backup singers or the song itself. Or his hair. To me, it's uncomfortable to watch. Anyway, I wish the whole hype about him would stop. Everything, good or bad, kind of gets blown out of proportion and it all just feeds into the hysteria. It's not the first time someone's stuck around longer than people thought they would and the whole "vote for the worst" site has been around for at least one season before this. But now that reporters and tv personalities start to take notice of the situation they have to beat the thing to death and then do stories about how much other reporters and tv personalities are talking about it. (I'm looking at you NBC News. strap it down!) |

That's a good last point. You know something is being overhyped or beaten to death when the news stories of the day are not about the actual story, but are about the hype of the story. I'm tiring of Sanjaya, and for that matter. I don't think Lakisha has been on her game since they moved into the big studio. Blake is still my frontrunner, but there really is no one who is an absolute standout. There is no Chris Doughtry this year, which is disappointing. | ||

So, I guess Sanjaya got kicked off huh. For me, the show almost had it's first "Oh crap" moment of the year, but narrowly missed out. The way I see it, there are four real contenders. Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin, and Blake. And since two of those were in the bottom three with Sanjaya, something had to give. Luckily, I guess, Sanjaya went home, so at least for now the top four are around. But with only six people left, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the real contenders go home this week. Personally, I think Melinda is the one who should win. If I had to guess who will, I would say either she or Jordin will. I would like to see Blake bring the beatbox back, but it all depends on what style songs they make them sing probably. Either way, I don't think he's the best and I don't think he will win, but I do like to watch him perform. |

Who would I rather see in concert between Jordin, Blake, and Melinda? Blake. He seems to have the most enjoyable personaility, and I would go as far as saying that these three are probably fairly equal talent wise (or close enough to begin looking at the "x-factors"). That's kind of how I'm determining things now. Jordin has an annoying, "I'm the extra-hyper high school girl" personality, Melinda still hasn't figured out that she's good and goes into shock everytime someone tells her she sings good, and Blake seems to know that he is a performer and puts on the best shows when he sings. I could see any of these three winning, but Blake has the "x-factor". The talent level seems low this year. Chris Richardson is not good, and neither is Phil. LaKisha has been disappointing and hasn't had a good, solid performance since making it to the top 12. |

As far as I'm concerned, Melinda is in another league compared to the others. She's been the best or one of the 2 or three best every single week. The others can't even come close to that. Jordin is next after that. Then everyone else falls in after those two. |

I was unimpressed with Jordin last night. She seemed to choke up during the middle of her song. I'd rank 'em Melinda, Blake, Jordin. But Phil has really impressed me this past 2 weeks. That being said, I would predict either Chris or Lakisha being voted off. |

Blake has surpassed them all with his performance last night. His vocals was spot on, he was creative, he was entertaining, and it was probably one of the best performances of the season overall. Jordin struggled big time and I now wouldn't be shocked if she was going home. Lakisha held her own by finding a song that fit her style. Melinda was good as usual, but Blake is my frontrunner. Here's my litmus test: who would I rather see in concert? Blake is the only one I would pay to see. |

Blake was really good. He incorporated the hook from the original which kept it from being too much "made his own" and the rest of the song was way more original and entertaining than anything else this season. If he teamed up with someone like Pharrell, he could make some hits. |

I'm not saying that I "would" pay, but if I wanted to see one of these people in concert, the only one I would ever consider would be Blake. But I'm not a concert go-er, and if I was, I would not go see someone who's only talent i singing. Jack Johnson or John Mayer would be pretty sweet to see in concert someday. |

Sarah and I saw John Mayer so many times in such a short span of time that by the last concert we just couldn't have cared less. Luckily he was touring with Counting Crows at the time, and they were good. (Except they were the "old" band touring with the "new" kid, thus a good 50% of the crowd thought that the "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" song was their only hit.) |

I see it's time for me to set you guys straight. Ha. In an unusual week, I actually ended up disagreeing with Simon a lot last night. He's usually the one who says what I was already thinking. I thought Phil was good, though nothing spectacular. When I heard he was doing Blaze of Glory, I was excited. One, because when they showed him practicing, it sounded good. But more so, it was because I used to really like that song. I actually remember, when I was younger, taking a plastic whiffle ball bat and pretending it was a guitar when that video came on and rocking out to it. I think Matt was there doing it with me, but I won't speak for him. By the way, younger = last week. Ok, not really. I actually liked Jordin's performance. The beginning was a little weak but when she actually sang out on the last half it sounded good. I wondered who would try Dead or Alive and I though it would be a trainwreck if Chris tried it. Then he started and I was like, "this isn't so bad, I need to be more fair toward his performances and not assume I won't like it." And then after five or ten seconds I hated every moment of it. It wasn't anything. And the judges seemed to like it for some reason. I wondered if anyone would/could do "Always" or "This Ain't a Love Song" and apparently they could and Lakisha did. Strangely, somewhat, I didn't like it. I could hear where she was good at parts but I guess I probably compared it too much to the original (which I think I have on tape!) and I just didn't like it. But the judges did, and I think she's good overall, so that's ok. Blake was really good. I almost don't like it that the judges liked it soooo much because it makes it less cool somehow. But it was good. I actually didn't really like Melinda's performance. I can see how the judges thought it was Tina Turneresque but I don't like that tough, throaty, sound that women do on songs like that. So I didn't really enjoy it. Actually though, when they showed her practicing, I really liked it. She's the best. In order, Melinda Jordin/Blake (tie) Lakisha Phil (he' rising so it's close, but he still is just behind) Chris (the only one I want to see go) This will be a tough one tonight. Two people leave. If anyone in the top three goes, it will be really a shame (you know, a shame in the realm of american idol, not in the real world) |

Your wrong on Jordin's performance (ugh), but correct on the rest. Except I didn't hear Phil last night but since he just got the boot that doesn't much matter. |

Jon, I think Blake has passed Melinda, and you know it!! Ha. And I think that Chris is going home, so Jon's bottom 2 was correct. Jordin's performance was not good. She was way below her range and the vocals were shaky all around. I was disappointed that no one did Bed of Roses, and even moreso because Jordin could have done that song and done it well, but she did Livin' on a Prayer and didn't do it well. Quote of the night last night: Jordin talking to Bon Jovi: "My mom told me about you guys." (ok, not an exact quote, but that was the gist). I'm sure Bon Jovi felt great after that. It was funny also the number of people who had never heard of Bon Jovi. Crazy. |

I think we should do an American Idol picks page next year, like we have for the NFL. Anyone notice how Phil got a different song for his going away montage? Jordin's comment was funny in an awkward sort of way. But she is 17. And Bon Jovi told them his kids loved watching them. Also, I agree it was kind of strange that people weren't familiar with Bon Jovi. Also, bed of roses would have been good. Which reminds me, when is Guns n Roses week on American Idol? Blake could do wonders with a beatbox on Welcome to the Jungle. It could just be him repeating "knees" over and over again for two minutes. |

I'm not sure if this was finished up on another thread or not, but just in case not, Melinda was 3rd, Blake was 2nd, and Jordin won. And none of us cared apparently. I think that might because all the people that had no business winning were dismissed and then the show became less interesting because any of the 3 left could've easily won. |
