Baseball Playoffs

What a day yesterday. The Dodgers get 2 players thrown out at the plate...ON THE SAME PLAY!!! Tori Hunter loses on a gamble to dive for a ball he probably should have laid back on, and the result is a decisive 2 run inside-the-park homerun. So now the Twins are down 2-0 with the next game coming in Oakland. What happened? They finish with one of the best 2nd halves in league history, a cy young and MVP candidate, the batting champion, and they can't put it together when it counts. What are the thoughts of NutCan's Twins correspondents?

I waited all season for the offense to do what it always does and die. Its sad that it had to happen starting with the first game of the playoffs. I don't know if anyone here actually watched the games since you probably all have jobs, but except for about 3 pitches, Santana was ridiculous in game 1. He had 6 K's in the first 3 innings and had 2 innings under 8 pitches. He was owning everyone on the A's (except Frank Thomas of course). There was no question Hunter should have laid back on that ball. It would have been 1st and 2nd, 2 outs and a guy with a 0.89 ERA pitching. There was no need for a diving catch. It was saving absolutely nothing.

Only bright spot: Nick Punto currently has 2 Pete Rose points for head first slides into first base. And he made some pretty sweet foul ball catches.

I predict Brad Radke's arm falls off during the 6th inning of game 3, but it crosses the plate with the ball still in hand and strikes out Milton Bradley. Twins wim 5-2

If anyone without cable wants it I can give them the login to MLB TV. My friend knows a guy who knows a guy who works there. Send me an email.

I was kind of disappointed that they won the division since then they didn't play the Yankees and I wouldn't get to see them. Now if they do make it to the ALCS I just end up having to pay twice as much for a ticket.

Micah, what's your email

and sliding into first is indeed stupid; the ONLY reason to slide into first is if you are trying to avoid a tag and sliding gets you out of the taggers reach. Otherwise, you are always always faster running the whole way.

Will that work for us even in the usually blacked out EC area Micah? Cause if so why are you just bringing this up now? :) (Actually We'd all have paid for it if the Twins weren't blacked out. It's not often you find a business that refuses your money.)

I forget the exact circumstances, but I don't think his slides into first were on routine type plays. I think there were good reasons why a slide was beneficial there. I could be wrong though.

The first slide he actually might have been safe if he hadn't slid.

I think it still works no matter where you are but I have no idea. I have only had the login for a couple of weeks before the season ended, and I never thought about giving it here. sorry.

Anyways its mmladousa AT ladousa.com to email me to get in

I don't know about you all, but I would love to see a Midwest World Series. It would be the unCoast Series (New York, Boston, Florida, Anaheim). And even though Chicago and Houston were in it last year, Having two teams from the midwest would be pretty sweet I think.

Endy Chavez deserves to be in the World Series after that homerun catch. He needs to join the Cardinals for 2 weeks or something. Seriously though, I played left field in high school and I once tried to make that same play. Of course white men can't jump and the ball was still like 15 feet over my head, but I thought it would look cool. Unfortunately, it was a chain link fence in Colfax and I soon found out that whipping your arm backwards over a chain link fence hurts like hell. Which takes me back to Endy. How did he not hyperextend every ligament in his arm on that catch? Amazing.

Also, I was pulling for the Mets and I have to ask how in the world do you strike out looking with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th down by 2 runs? If you're going to strike out at least close your eyes and take a hack. Amazing.

I don't really care who wins, but if forced at gunpoint to pick I'll go with the Tigers.

Ok, Skip. Good enough reason for me. I was leaning Cardinals because the Tigers are a "rival", but I really don't care all that much.

Cant I just bet that all the players will have a really good time?

....as for Alex's comments. Didn't 2 players go down looking in the 9th? It was a sorry inning after getting the 2 lead off guys on and getting everyone's hopes up.

First, the catch. I would make out with that catch given the chance. I'm in love with it.
Also, just a really good game overall, even if I wanted the Mets. I still hold it against the Cardinals that they let the White Sox and Tigers walk all over them and got swept by the Royals (although who didn't). For much of the season I was a bit frustrated at teams like the Cardinals who would make the playoffs even though they weren't good while the Twins seemed on track to be like the best third place team ever. Obviously things changed by the end, but I still don't like the Cardinals a bit.

Second, to me, the striking out looking thing really isn't that terrible because they were great curveballs. They look like crap until the last moment.

Also, sure Micah's dad is a Cardinals fan, but what about Magnum PI? What about his feelings?

and a curve ball down the middle on 0-2 with the bases loaded is probably not what any credible baseball fan/analyst would have predicted in that situation. While you must defend the strikezone in that situation, even Beltran was so completely overtaken by that pitch that he knew immediately that he was just had.

If St. Louis wins tonight, the collective National League should stick their tongues out and say "na na na na na" to the American league. The Cardinals ended up with the 13th best record in baseball(not to mention that the NL was humiliated by the AL this year in interleague play), and they are now 1 win away from a dominating series win over one of the hottest teams in recent World Series history.

Joe Buck sucks as an announcer, hands down. Is he instructed never to get excited about anything and to keep his voice the same inflection during a preseason football game as in the conclusion of the World Series?

Anyway, what a crappy World Series. The team I wanted to win won, but Detroit played like a team that lost 90 games, not like a team that had just won 7 straight playoff games coming into the series. Not to take anything away from the Cardinals. They played very well.
