A Conversation With Colin Powell

This is a good interview with the Secretary of State. It gives an interesting insight into his thoughts on foreign policy and other topics, without being what I would call "overly political".

So, we were at Applebees tonight, and Doug was interviewed on baseball tonight for like a long time. we couldn't see what they were saying but he was looking FIIINE. he even looked skinnier. Then he homers in the game!
Dorsey Levens is back with the Eagles. Best of luck to him, but I hope the Eagles don't go anywhere this year. Alright, I think that's it. And no, I haven't read the colin powell article.

If you were going to skip the capitalization of a name in your comment, I would have gone with Doug, Dorsey Levens, or even Applebee's instead of Colin Powell.

He's so well spoken.

Perhaps Jon, the brilliant economist, can explain what zero sum means.

It was indeed interesting, I think the teenager/parent analogy is very apt.

It was long and drawn out. It could be 1/5 the length and still have the same information. Now I have to go to bed because reading it wore me out. Levens was washed up 3 years ago.

The Atlantic Monthly is an excellent magazine and is worth a subscription way before you renew your subscription to Stuff and Maxim. As far as zero-sum economics goes, economics.com has the best definition in my opinion...

When the gains made by winners in an economic transaction equal the losses suffered by the losers. It is identified as a special case in GAME THEORY. Most economic transactions are in some sense positive-sum games. But in popular discussion of economic issues, there are often examples of a mistaken zero-sum mentality, such as PROFIT comes at the expense of WAGES, higher PRODUCTIVITY means fewer jobs, and IMPORTS mean fewer jobs here.

The last sentence is very important. Especially for anyone that thinks things like, "If they raise the minimum wage at all, there will be massive layoffs and the economy will not improve." Many different factors go into calculations like this.

Was Jon an econ major?

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:"Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"

The survey was a huge failure...

In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
And in the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant

The next bobblehead day is September 19th at 110. Yea right. That was nice of them to put it on a Sunday. Like I'm going to miss a packer game for a bobblehead. The Vikings play on Monday night against the eagles. they must not have figured out that some twins fans are packer fans. this is my last wednesday night of summer vacation, scary!

Twins/Packer fans or not many people would rather watch any football game over going to a baseball game. It seems like an odd choice.

I give you one good reason to root against the US. I am a goddamn red-blooded Lithuanian, and after we trounce Italy tomorrow, we're gonna kick Team USA's ass again. Does anyone know where I can get a Sarunas Jasikevicius jersey.

I try to avoid Whitlocks articles because you can never get 2 lines into them without the race card getting played.

I didn't really read much of it. What I hate about the US basketball team is that they are pretty much all jerks who most of them got on the team because a bunch of other people turned down the offer. Another joke about the team: Ron Artest, former defensive player of the year!, didn't even get asked to be on the team. Also, during the opening ceremony many of the other US athletes asked some of the players for their autographs, and most of them pretty much just blew them off. Martina Navratilova, who did give out her autograph when others asked for it, noticed this taking place and was disgusted by it. No, I don't need a reason to root against this team. I need a ton of reasons to actually root for them, and I haven't seen one.

I think the problem people have is that it would be bad enough if people just didn't care, or didn't want to root for them. The problem is Americans actually WANTING them to lose.

I don't think it's a problem wanting them to lose. This team is basically filled with a bunch of people I don't like anyway, plus a whole bunch of other reasons including the ones I listed earlier. I wanted them to lose. I rooted against them when they played Argentina today, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

How can you root against your own country? Back in the day, you could be executed for that. It's well documented that the team that was put together just plain sucked, for many many reasons. This wouldn't be the first time that athletes behaved like jerks. I haven't heard anything about this incident, and I don't even care enough to try and look it up. Maybe they just wanted to enjoy the ceremony without having to sign autographs all night. Who knows, who cares? You don't have to like the fact that those particular players were on the team, and you can criticize their actions (and their crappy performances), but when comes down to it they were still representing our country and it seems wrong to me to root against them.
