Celestica and the Pleasent co are shutting thier doors in Eau Claire. So much for all our memories there. =) Luckily the news was sure to notify everyone that the annual American Girl sale at the Children's Museum would continue and was sure to gloss over the fact that 170 people were out of a job.

Also the company that makes the Radio Flyer wagons in Chicago is closing and moving to China.

I'd make a political comment but I think by this point it's implied.

was the political comment that outsourcing jobs to China isn't necessarily a bad thing?

Well most of the jobs were just lost period. Personally I don't think outsourcing is that bad of a thing. We're all people and they need to make a living too.

But....does the outsourcing of jobs treat the new foreign employees fairly? I mean seriously, one of the biggest attractions of overseas jobs is the cheap labor, ie we can get away with paying them very little because they don't fall under the rights granted to American workers. Is that right?

It's hard to like the fact that in general the people are treated like crap compared to american workers. However, by there standards these jobs are pretty sweet gigs. People line up for miles when nike opens a new plant to try and get a job there.

It's a fair question. I certaqinly think they should be treated humanely. However, I would dare say that paying "low" wages can still be fair. It all depends upon the situation, of course. If the equivalent of 3 American dollars has a lot of purchasing power in another country, it might not be such a bad deal. However, there are probably cases where although the US company is paying double what other companies are paying, it is still not enough to make a decent living. That isn't exactly fair.

I guess we have to look at it in a case by case manner.
